As any horse owner knows, keeping your animal in peak health takes a bit of effort and a partnership between you and your veterinarian. The team here at Color Country Animal Hospital is ready to help you with all your equine health care needs. Our veterinarians are experts in horses, their needs, and ways to keep costs down when treating them.

Equine dentistry is one of the most important parts of their regular health care. Over time, a horse’s teeth will wear in patterns that reflect their diet, habits and environment. For many horses, uneven wearing can lead to a variety of medical problems that require expensive and invasive interventions. Sharp points on the teeth can cause cuts and ulcers to form on the inside of their cheeks, causing pain and discomfort. Regular dental care can remove the sharp points and allow the wounds in the mouth to heal. This is often a recurring problem in horses and will require annual treatment. Conditions like wave mouth can develop in older horses after years of inadequate dental care.

Colic is the frustration of every horse owner. It’s a general term that describes pain in the belly, whether that’s the gut itself or the organs surrounding it. On the least dangerous end of the spectrum, there’s just indigestion from a poor diet. On the extreme end, colic could mean a twisted gut that requires immediate surgery at a referral hospital. Make sure you know the signs of colic in your horse and be proactive about preventing problems before they begin.
